Mental Strength, Mental Health

You are what you say you are…

It sounds silly but it is true. Anyone who has ever changed career will have realised it is true. At first you have “impostor syndrome” but then all of a sudden you are running a new life, dressing differently, carrying yourself different, mixing with different people…

If you act shy you will be more shy…

If you give in to OCD you will become more OCD…

Afraid of something? Then you’ll be more afraid in the future…

If you are uncomfortable in some situations and therefore put them off or avoid them then it will become worse, being comfortable with the uncomfortable is a great way to boost your mental health and to be stronger (a simple exercise anyone can do is cold water therapy or cold showers!). When situations arise that you do not like, rather than avoid them or “run away” you will have the mental strength to tackle them.

Everyone has mental “hang-ups”, it is important to learn what yours are and to accept them – they are who you are. Don’t beat yourself up for your weaknesses, and certainly don’t keep making the same mistakes without even realising it! Once you accept your strengths and weaknesses for what they are, you can think clearly about them and see what you are happy or unhappy about. Following on from this you can learn more about your strengths and weaknesses and make clear decisions about what you want to improve.

If you are not good at something it is important to:

1) Recognise you are not good at it, but don’t feel bad;

2) Tackle it head on! Whatever you are not good at you need to practice more, you need to go out of your way to actively seek it out and combat it. Whether it is parallel parking, Microsoft excel, or talking to strangers! Do it more and you’ll be better at it in no time
