The Journey of Elmo
Elmo has been bestowed with a greater understanding of human behaviour following a visit by the Earth Spirit and a period of captivity on Busaka island.
During his time on Busaka island, Elmo befriends a fez-wearing chimpanzee named Charlie and his family, along with a white leopard called Cleopatra. Now they have escaped from the island, this group of animals must learn to adapt to their new surroundings and make peace with the humans that inhabit the area.
Complications arise when a new uncompromising police commissioner arrives in Jinja, with his modern policing practices. He soon has a surprising suspect in his sights for a long-unsolved case.
Elmo is a young hippo living at the source of the Nile on Lake Victoria with his tribe when the decision is made to visit the mysterious Sacred Place. On this trip, Elmo is kidnapped by tribesmen who inhabit one of the islands and taken to live with them in a world that is alien to him. Elmo has to grow up being tested every day with adventure and danger.
Elmo is visited by the Earth Spirit, who has singled him out for something special, and he realises he has to live and learn to fulfil his own destiny.
Elmo sees the damage that humans are doing to the world around him. He needs to survive, understand their ways and think of what the future holds for the animal kingdom – a challenge indeed.
Following on from 'The Adventures of Patricia the Hippo', author David Jackson decided he wanted to write about what might have happened to a young hippo named Elmo.
Readers of the Patricia books will no doubt be aware that Elmo goes missing on a journey to the 'Sacred Place', in David's third book. To find out exactly what happened you'll need to read the book "Being Human". It's not really much of a giveaway to say Elmo survived his encounters with the humans (particularly if you have read Patricia's ninth adventure "The Great Storm") but readers learn why he was away for so long.
David Jackson has since found the time to write a brand new story about Elmo, following his return to Jinja, titled "Mistaken Identity". Naturally, Elmo has made some new friends on his escapades, among them a fez-wearing chimpanzee named Charlie and a white leopard called Cleopatra. However, it's not long before the actions of his new acquaintances have caught the attention of a new Police Commissioner in Jinja.
A third adventure titled "Iron Mask" is currently being written.
These books are companion stories to the Adventures of Patricia the Hippo at the Source of the Nile.
