The Mas itself is composed of a beautiful collection of 18th century stone farmhouses set at the head of a valley covered with white oak trees.  As a farming community, the hamlet of Arjac was once home to a population of around 70, but now has only three homes of which le Mas d’Arjac is the most substantial. Whilst at one time it would have been a hive of agricultural activity, Arjac is now a haven of peace and tranquility with only the odd mooing cow and the occasional tractor passing by.

Although we are in La France profonde, it is just 15 minutes by car to the ancient town of Villefranche de Rouergue. Villefranche is not only handy for its excellent shopping, restaurants,  and renowned Thursday market,  but also has a fascinating history as a bastide – a fortified mediaeval town with a fine, arcaded central square and an imposing collegiate church. As a market town serving a huge rural area, Villefranche provides all ones practical needs in a stunning setting.

There are no fewer than 10 of Les plus beaux villages de France within an hour’s drive of Arjac, as well as two Grands Sites de France, Conques and Albi. Easy half or full day outings can also be made to Saint Antonin Noble Val, Corde-sur-Ciel, Cahors, Figeac, Rocamadour, les Gouffres de Padirac, the Lot valley, St Cirque la Popie, Roquefort, the Viaduc de Millau, and the Gaillac wine region – all attractive and fascinating destinations.
