Safe, legal work on roads and pavements
Street works and adoptable services apply when a project extends beyond private boundaries onto public highways, pavements or footpaths. We carry out dropped kerb installation for driveway access, following full council approval, alongside Tarmac® surfacing for adoptable roads, footpaths and highways. These works must comply with Streetworks regulations, which set the legal and safety standards for working on public roads and ensure traffic, pedestrians and utilities are properly protected during construction.
Edwards Surfacing delivers these projects with a clear focus on compliance, workmanship and council acceptance, working throughout the South East from our base in Milton Keynes. With 60 years’ experience, we understand the importance of doing the job properly from the outset, so the finished surface meets specification and is signed off without unnecessary delay. We also support larger schemes through experienced road surfacing contractors and specialist car park surfacing services, ensuring full project delivery from planning through to completion.
Why licensing and approval matter
Work on public highways is tightly controlled because it affects everyone using the surrounding area. A Streetworks Licence, sometimes referred to under Section 50 requirements, confirms that a contractor is trained and authorised to carry out work on roads and pavements in line with New Roads and Street Works Act standards. Before work begins, council permission and permits are normally required, and authorities may inspect sites during works to check safety, signage, barriers and compliance.
We plan and deliver works with these requirements built in, including safe systems of work around traffic, pedestrians and existing services. This applies to dropped kerbs, pavement reconstruction, resurfacing and any work required to adoptable standards. Edwards Surfacing ensures all activity is carried out legally and to specification, reducing the risk of delays or rejected works.

What you gain from getting it done properly
Properly installed dropped kerbs provide safe and approved vehicle access while reducing the risk of disputes with the local authority. High-quality Tarmac® surfacing improves durability under traffic and weather exposure, supporting longer service life. Clear traffic management and controlled working methods help minimise disruption during construction.
When Streetworks regulations are followed correctly, the finished work is more likely to be approved the first time, avoiding costly rework. Using an unlicensed contractor can result in enforcement action, fines, work being halted or required removal, along with safety risks and potential liability for the property owner. Following the correct process ensures the work is safe, compliant and built to last.
