The author of this website was born in Devizes and joined 3rd Devizes Wolf Cub Pack in February 1957.  When the time came for him to graduate to a Scout Troop, he moved to 2nd Devizes, then meeting in the Scout Hall in Southbroom Road, as there was no Troop at 3rd.

In 1963 2nd Devizes Scout Group left the Scout Hall and, after a few months meeting in a small church hall belonging to St James's Church, found a new headquarters in London Road. It was here that he later joined the Senior Scout Troop.

In 1967 he started his teacher training at Trinity and All Saints Colleges - now Leeds Trinity University - where he and several other students persuaded one of the tutors to become Group Scout Leader and opened 22nd Airedale Scout Group which met in one of the halls at the colleges.

On returning to Devizes in 1970 he started his teaching career at a school in Amesbury and subsequently spent forty-three years teaching in various schools and other educational establishments across Wiltshire. Also in 1970 he returned to 2nd Devizes as an Assistant Scout Leader in the Sea Scout Troop, later becoming Scout Leader.

He married in 1973 and has three adult children and seven grandchildren.

At the beginning of 1976 he was invited to become Assistant County Commissioner (Venture Scouts), a post that he accepted and held until June 1978 when he restarted the 3rd Devizes Scout Troop with his brother.

In February 1979 he was appointed Group Scout Leader of 3rd Devizes, a post that he held until the end of 2000.

In May 1986 he was appointed Assistant District Commissioner (Scouts), remaining in the post until May 1993.

At the start of 2001 he began a sabbatical from Scouting, with the intention of returning in 2002. However in that year Scouting saw another reform and he felt that he did not want to adapt yet again.

In December 2002 he was honoured by being given the title Honorary Scouter.
