The Beginnings
During the Second World War one of the priests of the Roman Catholic Parish in Devizes, Father Cecil Cutlack, wanted to do something for the young people of the parish and thought that a Scout Group and a Guide Company might be the answer.
He invited the children of the parish to St Joseph's School hall on Wednesday February 18th 1943. Boys and girls of all ages turned up and were divided into five groups:
boys of Scout age, boys of Cub age,
girls of Guide age, girls of Brownie age,
those that fell into none of these groups.
The two groups of boys became 3rd Devizes Scout Group, the older group of girls became 3rd Devizes Guide Company and the younger group became 3rd Devizes Brownie Pack.
All four sections held their weekly meetings in St Joseph's School hall.
3rd Devizes Scout Group was established as a Sponsored Group, with the Sponsoring Authority being the Roman Catholic Parish. Membership was open to all, not just members of the parish.
