Venture Scout Unit

In 1980 some members of the Troop who had reached the maximum age for Scouts wished to continue their Scouting, particularly the hillwalking and other outdoor activities that they had enjoyed, and so they persuaded one of the ASLs - Mr Michael Henley - to leave the Troop and become the Venture Scout Leader.

Mr Henley agreed and so Carpenters VSU was formed, taking its name from the patron saint of the Group. The Unit grew and soon became well-known in the county of Wiltshire, entering all the county competitions and often winning them.

The Unit increased its membership and flourished for several years until it decided, in 1986, to merge with two other VSUs in the District to form Moonrakers District VSU.

Some years later, in 1990, some other Scouts keen to continue their Scouting beyond the Troop persuaded Mr David Minty, who had been a Cub, a Scout, a Venture Scout and a Scout Leader at 3rd Devizes, to restart the Carpenters VSU. Mr Minty was appointed as Venture Scout Leader and the Unit flourished for a few years.
