net co2 'taker-outers' while living a simple, inspiring & luxurious life

  results for 2010

co2: minus 258 tonnes co2 as a family (minus 86.66 per person)

this figure includes minus 260 tonnes because we paid for an acre of rainforest to be left standing - locking in approx. 260 tonnes co2 per year. we did this with cool earth.  see link on the side panel.

our actual co2 total was 1.745 tonnes as a family (0.583 tonnes co2 per person.) [gas used: 50% of uk average.][elec 15% of uk avg.] start using ecotricity as supplier due to green gas product.

water: 54.83 cu. m as a family (50.07 litres per person per day).

this is 33.38% of uk average figure.

- brian also 'offset' his lifetime water usage with water aid after investigating cost of projects at drop 4 drop website.

- brian has also created a game to raise £1 bn for water aid in £1 donations (no more, no less) in 2011.  you can donate here.

landfill: 28kg as a family (9.33 kg per person) this is 2.07% of uk average.

what we've done over the years

stage one

stage two

stage three

2011 provisional figures for co2 = minus 0.613 tonnes as a family (minus 0.204 per person)

including cool earth = minus 260.613 tonnes co2

----------------------------------------

2012 provisional figures for co2 = minus 3.5 tonnes as a family (minus 1.16 per person)

including cool earth = minus 263.5 tonnes co2

----------------------------------------

calculated lifetime co2 emissions at climatecare.org offset them with them (& carbon neutral)

reduced emissions, consumption, waste & water usage through simple measures that anyone can take (no hair shirt required.)

declared intention to be net co2 'taker-outers' & took actions consistent with that e.g. in choice of home (new & south facing-no intention to buy new house until this game); in choice of cars (latest lowest emitting cars); in choice of transport (combined journeys, train, cycle & reduced flights to 1 european per year.) grow own veg.

stage four

made money (whilst burning co2 responsibly) & invested profits in low co2 technologies e.g solar panels, solar thermal & electric cars (nissan leaf & tesla model s.)  also spent that money on low-co2 food - local & organic & low co2 'luxuries' eating out at restaurants that serve local food; drank local beer, local wine & as local as possible champagne. effectively we're funding low co2 economy. 'offset' lifetime water use.

stage five

after getting ourselves in shape we started to tell others.

finally, we invested further in taking out carbon with cool earth.

solar panels are on track for generating 20% more than forecast in calendar year.  in late march to dec 2010 they 'took out' just short of 3 tonnes co2.

------------------------------------------

solar thermal surpasses all expectations providing hot water for showers for 7+ mths.

------------------------------------------

revenues per year seem set to be £2150p.a. for solar and £500 p.a. for solar thermal and these figs. do not include savings from gas & electricity (substantial) and savings on petrol when model s arrives (probably in region of £1500+ p.a. with the way oil prices are at minute.)

for every £1 that has been put on the roof it returns £2.50 without taking into account the savings on gas/ elec/ petrol as part of that. fancy getting some for yourself? we highly recommend our suppliers: east green energy & mosscliff environmental.
