Penhale Sands - 1992

This was a holiday of a couple of weeks staying at the Haven Perran Sands Holiday Park just north of Perranporth - access road at N50.3509° W5.1367°. The naturist beach was a short walk down through the dunes.  In the dunes, but covered with sand since 1980 was St Piran's Oratory.* While we were there, the naturist area seemed to begin just after a large red notice explaining how the path passes the Penhale Army Training Area. From there it extended along to the cliffs at the northern end.

During the holiday we visited Goonhilly Satellite Earth Station* - N50.0508° W5.1775°. Here we enjoyed the bus tour of the station before exploring the Visitors' Centre.

We also visited Flambards - N50.0936° W5.2605° - and while we were there we noticed many different aeroplanes flying around. We then discovered that RNAS Culdrose, next door, was holding its Air Day. When the Vulcan flew overhead it blocked out all speech, but we were excited to see it. We have since discovered that the Vulcan we saw was the last one to fly and is now being preserved by the Vulcan to the Sky Club.

St Piran's Oratory has since been excavated

and is now visible once more.

While on a day visit a few years later we were able to drive through the resort and park beyond the caravans and chalets. It was then a short walk down through the dunes, as before. However, Haven seems to have tightened up its entry procedures and now charges for parking.

Carbeil - 2014

We stayed at Carbeil during our tour of the Westcountry in September.

The site is quite small and on the edge of Downderry, a little village on the south coast of Cornwall a few miles east of Looe. There are several static caravans that are individually owned and one available for hire.  There are also about ten pitches for touring caravans or tents. The site is well-equipped, with a shower and lavatory block and a laundry room.

The owners live on site and near the house is the small swimming pool, hot tub and sauna.  The house also contains a small bar and a games room. Entrance at N50.3651° W4.3664°.

Free Wi-Fi included

Downderry Beach - 2014

This naturist beach is a short walk from Carbeil - see above. Leave the campsite and walk straight down the road ahead to the T-junction. Directly opposite is a footpath beside the primary school. When we were there this path had been blocked off with temporary fencing but this had been pushed aside by the locals to allow the path to be used. If this footpath is closed then there is another running from West Camps Bay, a cul-de-sac on the other side of the school.

On entering the beach make a careful note of the access point, as there are many paths leading down to the beach and most of them are private.

The area used by naturists is, as usual, the furthest from the village, although on a quiet day you may not have to walk as far. Be aware that there are several rocky outcrops that divide up the beach and render parts of it inaccessible at high tide.

Lower Poulza Post - 2014

We visited here as part of our tour of Devon and Cornwall.  We had entered the place into our sat-nav, but as we drove down the narrow lane we did hope that we were in the right place.  We were very pleased to see a gate bearing the sign Lower Poulza Post Holiday.

Lower Poulza Post is a working farm with about one and a half acres being given over to the campsite within an area of about three and a half acres that are available to walk in.  There is a new shower and lavatory block, 13A electric hook-ups, a washing machine and a refrigerator.  The campsite is divided into three areas, separated by hedges, and there is enough space in each area for about seven or eight pitches, although several of them are occupied permanently. The entrance at N50.7249° W4.5388°.

As there is a public footpath that runs along the access road, through the farmyard and along the edge of the field adjacent to the campsite, visitors are asked not to be nude within the farmyard and to take some form of cover with them if they venture out into the other fields.
