Oaklands - 2013
Oaklands is a small members’ club near Leicester. It sits in about six acres of woodland down a private drive. The area for caravans is surrounded by trees and is a short walk from the clubhouse, which contains a well-equipped kitchen, a function room, a television room, lavatories and showers.
Along one side of the clubhouse is a covered veranda overlooking a large lawn which leads across to the swimming pool. There is also a volleyball court, two miniten courts, two boules courts and a children's playground.
We visited Oaklands as part of our tour of the country. We made all the arrangements by email and were told that someone would be there to welcome us. On the day we telephoned ahead and, as we approached the entrance, saw one of the members waving to us. We were shown to our pitch and left to set up. Later we were given a tour of the facilities. One thing that we did find difficult was having to ask a member to unlock the gate for us if we wanted to go out and having to ring the bell for re-admittance. Fortunately on the second day we were given our own key and were told that as we were the first visitors, there was no system in place for allowing visitors to come and go. We had blazed a trail!
There is a large Sainsbury's at Fosse Park about four miles away, entrance at N52.5979° W1.1838°, and a small Co-op at Croft under a mile away, at N52.5557° W1.2430°.
From here we spent a day birdwatching at Brandon Marsh, a wildlife reserve which is the headquarters of the Warwickshire Wildlife Trust, entrance at N52.3822° W1.4344°.
