Georgia - the Peach State

Hidden River Resort - 2007

This was the furthest south that we travelled on our 2007 tour. Hidden River Resort is in the southern-most part of Georgia and on one bank of St Mary's River, which is the Georgia-Florida boundary. The entrance is at N30.4640° W82.2025°. The camp site is 88 acres which includes a large area of woodland. We enjoyed strolling along the woodland paths and were most disappointed not to see a rattlesnake or an alligator, although we were told that both are sometimes there.

We also enjoyed relaxing by and using the swimming pool and the outdoor showers. One day we noticed a leaf behind one of the control taps and then watched as it climbed out and revealed itself as a tree frog! It was only about two inches long but made up for its lack of size by the volume of its call, which could be clearly heard up to twenty yards away

While we were there the only other visitor was a retired teacher with a thirty foot Airstream caravan. He was on his way down to Cape Canaveral to watch the launch of one of the Space Shuttles.

From here we had planned to visit the Okefenokee Swamp. This was the reason that we had travelled so far south. Unfortunately the whole wildlife park was closed due to fire hazard.

Unlike most American naturist sites, Hidden River Resort did not have a No Cameras policy.

It might have been because we were the only ones there for most of the time,

but we were free to take photographs of the site and its facilities.

Since writing the above, we've noticed that the resort website now states

that cameras may not be carried.

Serendipity Park - 2016

In 2016 we spent another six weeks in America and stayed at Serendipity, near Cleveland, for a week in April. Entry at N34.6089° W83.6704°.

The site is forty-two acres and includes twenty-six units for full-time residents, other accommodation used by members and seven units for rent. We booked the poolside cabin with a kitchen. From our little verandah we had a view across the pool to the large clubhouse, the café, the hot tub room and the gym. We even had a second door with another little verandah out the back. Entry to the site is through a coded gate and visitors are given the code on arrival. Free wi-fi is available in the clubhouse and around the pool area.

Part of the site is wooded and includes a well-maintained path that goes down to the little creek that forms the boundary on that side.

We enjoyed our stay here, but we did not like seeing the many dogs walking about without leads. Of the dozen or more that we saw, only two were on leads.

From here we visited the Gold 'n' Gem gold mine, N34.5833° W83.8231°, about ten miles west of Cleveland, and Consolidated Gold Mines, N34.5378° W83.9755, about ten miles further west. At the first we washed gravel to find gemstones and at the second we had a tour of the mine and then panned for gold - and found some.

For shopping there are two big supermarkets in Cleveland: Ingles, recommended - entrance at N34.6031° W83.7639°; and Walmart - entrance at N34.5767° W83.7594°.

Unlike most American naturist sites, Serendipity Park did not have a No Cameras policy.

We were free to take photographs of the site, its facilities and ourselves,

but were asked not to include anyone else.

Since writing the above, we've noticed that the resort website now states that cameras are not permitted.
