Indiana - the Hoosier State
Drakes Ridge - 2019
Drakes Ridge is situated in the southeast of Indiana just a few miles north of the town of Vevay - pronounced vuh-vay - which sits on the side of the Ohio River, the boundary with Kentucky. It sits in 110 acres of forest with about twenty of them used for the cabins and caravans belonging to the members together with the clubhouse, which contains a well-equipped community kitchen with tables and chairs; a bathhouse containing a lavatory, a shower and a wash basin with another shower on one of the outside walls; a swimming pool and sun deck; a volleyball court, other games facilities; and a quarter-acre lake. When we were there the hot tub had been delivered and was being installed.
The other ninety acres are across the road and on each side of the road there is a notice warning people to cover up when crossing over. Across the little-used road is a half-acre lake with a mown path running around it. There are also several paths running through the woods. One of these goes right down to a river, which when we were there was dry. Beside it someone had built a little shrine with a statue of the Virgin Mary in it.
We spent a week here in September as part of our eight state tour of the USA and were made to feel very welcome. We rented one of the cabins which had a comfortable bed, a refrigerator, a microwave and a kettle as well as a verandah with a table and chairs and two sunbeds. Two highlights of the weekend were the pitch-in supper on Saturday and the pitch-in brunch on Sunday morning - two regular weekend events. Unfortunately we hadn't known about the pitch-in meals when we had shopped and so our catering arrangements did not allow for sharing, but we were made to feel very welcome as we cooked our own food and then ate it with the ten or so members who were there.
Free Wi-Fi included
The site had a slightly tired appearance, but the current president has great plans for the future. We would like to return in a few years to see how the site has changed.
In spite of the cabin that we rented having no bathroom or kitchen, this was such a friendly club and we were made to feel so welcome that we have awarded it a Star Site badge.
Vevay has an IGA supermarket, a CVS pharmacy and a Family Dollar shop all conveniently side by side and next to a BP petrol station, which also has a pizza shop attached.
Some of the roads around Drakes Ridge are only gravel tracks and are rough in places.
The directions on the club website give two via points to avoid these gravel tracks. Please heed them.
If travelling from the west they do add a few miles to the journey, but all the roads are asphalted.
We're driven on both and strongly recommend the via points.
We have included both via points in our sat-nav data.
In contrast with many American clubs, Drakes Ridge has a fairly liberal approach to photography.
